Wings has had a turbulent history of award categories. Each year seems to bring a demand for new awards
or the retiring of old awards. Several awards have been renamed, sometimes several times, over
the years. The following table lists the awards given by year:
Events history:
1994
Artistic direction split into with/without music.
Featured performance, male/female split into with/without music.
Hair and make-up split into two categories.
1995
Special effects category added.
1996
Youth performance category added.
1997
Vocal performance male/female categories added.
Artistic direction eliminated as a separate category; however, two awards were
given, one for best production and one for the director of the production in both
"with" and "without" music.
1998
When HLT and TRC merged to become Theatre Huntsville, there was no competition in
the "without music" categories, so those designations were dropped and the following
awards were merged:
Production, play with/without music became Production
Leading performance, play with/without music, male/female became Leading performance,
male/female
Featured performance, play with/without music, male/female became Featured performance,
male/female
Artistic direction, with/without music deleted.
Special mention category added.
1999
When Fantasy Playhouse (re)joined in 1999, it was felt that there was now competition
in the "without music" category again, so the following categories were split again:
Production became Production, play with/without music
Artistic direction became Artistic direction, play with/without music
Leading performance, male/female became Leading performance, play with/without music,
male/female
Featured performance, male/female became Featured performance, play with/without music,
male/female
Special mention was split into Judges' choice, male/female performance.
2000
Technical director, play with/without music categories added.
Leading performance, play with/without music, male/female renamed to Lead actor/actress,
singing/non-singing role.
Featured performance, play with/without music, male/female renamed to Supporting actor/actress,
singing/non-singing role.
Dance performance, male/female split into Male/Female dancer, short/extended piece categories.
Special effects category split into Visual effects and Sound effects categories.
